What flood zone am I in?

Type your address. We check FEMA's flood maps and tell you what your zone means, in plain English.

Your zone is a starting point, not a guarantee

FEMA maps show statistical risk from past data and models. During Helene and Milton, homes across Tampa Bay flooded in every zone, including Zone X. What matters most is how low your floor and doorways sit compared with the water around you.

Flood zone questions

How do I find out what flood zone I'm in?

Type your address into the lookup on this page. It checks FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer, the same data behind FEMA's official flood maps, and explains the result in plain English. Your official zone is also on your elevation certificate.

What does flood zone AE mean?

AE is a high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area with at least a 1% chance of flooding each year, where FEMA has set a Base Flood Elevation. Flood insurance is required for federally backed mortgages.

What does flood zone X mean?

Zone X is outside FEMA's 1% annual-chance flood area. Shaded X is moderate risk (about 0.2% per year); unshaded X is lower mapped risk. Many Tampa Bay homes in Zone X still flooded during Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

What is a VE flood zone?

VE is FEMA's coastal high-hazard zone: high-risk flooding with waves on top. Building rules are the strictest there.
